Spurn - To The Point!

Picture a beautiful June day in the North Of England. On this particular Sunday the whole OTBT gang grabbed our backpacks, loaded up two cars and headed off to a remote village on the Yorkshire coast, Kilnsea!

Kilnsea is situated in the East Riding Of Yorkshire, on the Holderness Coast and has family ties for all the OTBT team as our Grand and Great Grandparents lived and worked in this remote coastal area many years ago.

On the road, just before you turn right towards spurn point is St Helen's Church. The original was lost to the sea in 1826 but was replaced with the current St Helen's Church in 1865 at a cost of £425!

The Holderness Coast featuring Kilnsea and Spurn is on Europe's fastest eroding coastline. The annual rate of erosion is approximately 2 meters, that's 2 million tonnes of material every year!

The relics and broken buildings found on Kilnsea Beach are the remains of Godwin Battery which opened in 1915 as a first world war coastal defence structure and was re used during the second world war.

Turning right just before the caravan site is the winding narrow road to Spurn Point complete with new visitors centre!

Discovery Centre:

The new Spurn Discovery Centre opened in 2018 and is completely free to enter, 365 days of the year. You will find all the information you need here to make the most of your visit to Spurn. The best part... there's a cafe, toilet facilities and delicious ice cream!

Spurn is such a unique, picturesque, beautiful place as the road down to the point has been eroded over the years and after the tidal surge in 2013, was washed away completely.

Spurn Point is an important nature reserve and is surrounded by sea on three sides, it's exceptionally unique and is truly a special landscape.

Spurn is an ideal location for people of any age, escpecially families with sand, sea, scenery, wildlife, lighthouses and of course ice cream, from young to old, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

To get a glimpse of this beautiful, unique place, watch OTBT's latest upload featuring St Helens Church, the new "Discovery Centre" and much more:

Don't forget all good things are found Off The Beaten Track. Happy adventuring and see you soon!
